Whilst trying to establish her own work and style within the field of jewellery, Michelle felt pressure to conform to certain materials that were commonly seen and used within the jewellery market to make her work seem "precious".
Silver and gold.
Gemstones and pearls.
After trying her hand at working with these more popular precious jewellery materials she couldn't help but feel limited in her design and making techniques.
So she began questioning why other materials couldn't be more commonly used and appreciated in jewellery.
What other properties could they bring?
If there were more materials on offer, maybe more people would be open to them?
Possibly even more eco-friendly, recycled, or recyclable options?
This started an ongoing and still going experiment with non-precious materials in jewellery. She found each new material brought new aesthetics and benefits to explore and appreciate.
She is determined to bring preciousness and value to her jewellery not through the materials used, but in the design and craftsmanship.
PUTTING THE 'PRECIOUS' IN NON-PRECIOUS.
